HOW IT ALL STARTED

February 24, 2022 / Thursday

As usual, kind of automatically I look at my phone. I see the News Feed: Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Shock. Disbelief. Thinking 'it is impossible'.

Immediately I turn on my Polish TV News Channel and freeze in front of it for long hours.

February 26, 2022 / Saturday

By now everyone is fully aware that the WAR is real. Ukrainians are fleeing their country.

February 27, 2022 / Sunday

The WAR goes on. The WORLD starts helping Ukraine.

I am lying in bed; it is a late night. I am thinking about all the people who have to flee their houses in the middle of winter.

A thought appears in my head: 'Maybe I could also do something to help? Should I start a small collection point in my garage? I am sure transport will be easy to find.'

This is how the idea of the GOSHA Garage in Killwangen started.

Get the Garage ready! Inform the people!

March 1, 2022 / Tuesday

The Collection Point flyer is ready. Last touches and mid-day I send it off to a few friends. Literally to a few friends. Less than 10 for sure. Via WhatsApp. Only. No posting on FB, no posting on WhatsApp status, no other social media, nothing else.

In just few hours, the message spreads. People post it on their social media, send it to their contacts, it appears on their WhatsApp statuses, Insta stories and God knows where else.

People are amazing and I think everyone was simply wanting to help and spread the word for help!

It started getting real! I needed to get my garage ready for the following day - the official start of my collection point.

Alex, my son, 9.5-year-old then, was a Super Helper that day. We emptied the garage and cleaned the floor. He prepared the garage plan (on paper first!) and then he split the garage with a painter-tape into sections (clothes, food, sleeping, medication, etc.). Each section had hand-written label (he insisted that handwriting is more special than print😊). He even made small Ukrainian flags out of his school color paper.

It was 11pm, we were ready for the following day. Big day. Start of our collection point.

Have a look at some memories from that day.

"The Help idea is there. We need to spread the news now!”

February 28, 2022 / Monday

I got up on Monday with a clear idea that I want to create a Humanitarian Help Collection Point in my garage. I spent some time that day researching what is it exactly that I should be collecting. I started preparing a small flyer, in English & German.

Gosh, I realized my German is really poor:) Took me ages to create a small write up (I did not discover DeepL back than) about why I am doing what I am doing and kindly asking people for help. Plus preparing a list of things to collect.

20 years in a big corporation however, taught me that things need to be done properly. I needed a properly looking flyer, with all necessary info, something I would not be ashamed of:) The flyer was getting ready. After some major corrections of my German (thank you Alex Mlynarczyk!) the flyer was more or less ready. Let me show you what the first flyers looked like😊

Watch out for next history posts next week!
